16.1 The Council does not currently have a high number of registrations on its statutory Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Register, however there were 430 people on the Buildstore Register looking to self-build in Maldon District and of those, 127 live in the District. There is therefore an indication that self/custom build, as a form of housing provision, is of interest to local people. The council has a legal duty to provide plots equivalent to the number of people who have joined the statutory register. To ensure compliance with this in the future, the council could therefore consider allocating specific sites for self-build/custom build, or encourage them to be brought forward on smaller sites in the District
